Chris Smith: Road Trip
Final Edit and Portfolio Sequencing
Editor’s Notes
Chris came to me with no fewer than 70 images to look through to give my thoughts and edit. I ended up with about 45 contenders and whittled it down to 15, and I think it’s the better for it.
I am awaiting the artist’s statement, but here I can give my own.
The thing about this work that gets me is the vastness of the sky and only the subtle hint that humans, from so far away, are insignificant compared to the universe. These images surprised me when I first saw them. The loneliness, though here it’s not a bad thing, comes through as we see the tiniest hints of the human-built world beneath a world covered in spectacular skies. I wonder: Does anyone even bother looking up?
